Teaching Students that Mistakes are a Part of Learning
In the article “Unlocking Children’s Math Potential: 5 Research Results to Transform Math Learning,” Professor Jo Boaler discusses five important concepts: all students can achieve at high levels; students’ ideas about their ability determine their learning pathways and math achievement; mistakes and struggle are extremely important for learning; mathematics should be dissociated with speed; and teachers' messages are hugely powerful. This article also discusses how students that have a growth mindset work longer on problems, embrace challenge and learn from mistakes.
As mentioned in the article, “we need math environments in which students are given open tasks and challenging work that causes them to struggle, experience cognitive conflict and make mistakes.” (p. 4)
